Grace" is a Christian hymn written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton . It transmits the message that forgiveness and
redemption are possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be
delivered from despair through the mercy of God. .
"Amazing Grace" was written to illustrate a sermon on New Year's Day.
Firstly it could be recited by the parishioner without music. The lyrics have
been adapted to more than twenty melodies, although the most known and frequent
is the one called “New Britain” It has become a classic in the popular hymnbooks
in the English-speaking world. The New Testament
served as the basis for many of the lyrics. Common
meter hymns were interchangeable with a variety of tunes; more than twenty
musical settings of "Amazing Grace" were
sung, until it was associated with a traditional song called “New Britain”. Two
editors and compositors, Dwight Moody and Ira Sankey lead a revival of the song
in many cities of the Unites States and Europe, giving to the song an
international advertising. Their songs are the precursor of the Gospel and
enjoyed a good success.
Later , the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, senior Scottish regiment of
the British Army, recorded an instrumental version
featuring a bagpiper soloist
accompanied by a bagpipe and drum band.
